HYDERABAD: The State government on Thursday contended that Polavaram project was well within the ambit of Bachawat Tribunal Award and therefore the order of the National Environment Appellate Authority (NEAA) did not stand.

Representing the State before a Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising judges T. Meena Kumari and G. Rohini, Advocate-General C.V. Mohan Reddy said that the government was constructing a retaining wall to prevent submergence of some parts in Chhattisgarh and Orissa.

The Advocate-General was prefacing his lengthy arguments in the writ petition filed by the State government challenging the order of the NEAA. It may be recalled that the NEAA had set aside the clearances granted by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) on the ground that the opportunity of hearing was not given to people in some villages in Orissa and Chhattisgarh, who were likely to be affected due to the project.
