VISAKHAPATNAM: The birth centenary celebrations of Prof. K.R. Srinivasa Iyengar organised by the AU Department of English was inaugurated by AU Vice-Chancellor L.Venugopala Reddy on Monday. Recalling the academic contributions of Prof. Iyengar, Prof. Reddy said he was a great scholar and a legendary figure, who pioneered the growth and development of the university during his stint as Vice-Chancellor of AU in 1966.

One of his pioneering works in the field of education was his study of Indian Writing in English. In her keynote address, Prof. Jasbir Jain, Emerita Fellow of Rajasthan University, who was the chief guest of the occasion, highlighted the unique aspects of the work of Prof. Iyengar.

Prof. Ila Rao, president of the English Alumni Association, recalled her association with Prof. Iyengar when he joined AU Department of English in 1947. “This was the place where he crystallised his views and opinions and prepared his lectures in Indian Writing in English to be given at the University of Leeds in 1958 that later formed the basis of the famous book, Indian Writing in English,” she said. His initiative in writing Indian Writing in English impelled the study of this course all over the world today.
