HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has assured a Telugu Desam Legislature Party delegation that all steps will be taken to see that farmers get a price of Rs. 1,150 per tonne of sugarcane.

The TDLP delegation led by E. Dayakar Rao, secretary told the Chief Minister that the sugarcane growers were in dire straits with the price not exceeding Rs. 1,000 a tonne and demanded a price of Rs. 1,500. He said Dr. Reddy gave a patient hearing and promised that the sugar factories would be asked to pay Rs. 1,150.

The delegation comprising C. Muthyam Reddy, president, Telugu Rythu, Padala Aruna, another TDLP secretary, two MLCs, Revanth Reddy and Sudhakar submitted a memorandum highlighting the fall in prices of various crops and sought government’s intervention.

They brought to Dr. Reddy’s notice that though the support price for cotton was Rs. 2,050, price at which cotton was being purchased ranged between Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 1,600 and that the CCI had purchased just two per cent of stocks.
