Municipal Stadium will host the four-day event

VIJAYAWADA: Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium is being spruced up to host the four-day junior National athletic meet, being held from Nov 24 to 27. Krishna District Amateur Athletic Association (KDAAA) is organising the meet for the second time in a short span of three years.“The successful staging of the event in 2004 has impressed the Athletic Federation of India (AFI) bigwigs in allotting the meet once again to our city.

We have set up 11 committees for the smooth conduct of the mega event,” District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar on Tuesday.

Most of the contestants are expected to arrive in the city on Nov 22 and the accommodation for boys would be at SRR & CVR College, Bishop Grassi and Siddhartha Hotel Management.

“For girls, the accommodation will be provided at Montessori Mahila Kalasala, Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala and Bishop Hazaraiah High School,” said KDAAA secretary A. Raghavendra Rao.

Mr. Sudhakar said the pits for long and triples jumps were ready and the track was almost ready. “The grass-cutting, mowing and watering are completed. The track would be marked on Nov 22. All the athletic equipment such as high jump foam pits, hurdles have arrived from Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) and the State athletic officials led by Andhra Pradesh Amateur Athletic Association secretary P. Ranga Rao have already arrived to supervise the arrangements,” he added.

As many as 2,500 boys and girls in the age groups of 14, 16 18 and 20 will take part in the four-day event. Keen to keep the visitors in good humour, the organising committee has planned a series of cultural events from Nov 24 to 26 featuring dance and music by local artistes. The meet will be inaugurated on Nov 24 at 4 p.m.
