Waves Foundation, Ankuram are on the job of counselling sexually abused children

HYDERABAD: The sensitive and delicate issue of sexual abuse of children is out of the closet.

Waves Foundation, a city-based NGO, together with ‘Ankuram’ a woman and child development society, organised a signature campaign near Eat Street on Necklace Road on Monday on the occasion of Eighth annual World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse. Waves Foundation and Ankuram had launched ‘Stay Safe’ State-wide campaign with the motto, ‘Every child deserves a life free from abuse’ a couple of months ago to spread awareness on the prevalence of sexual abuse of children in the State and measures to combat it by sensitising and the empowering children as also parents, professionals and the law-makers to respond to the problem effectively.

Waves Foundation founding secretary A.M. Sirish said the World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse was launched by Women’s World Summit Foundation and observed every year to strengthen and support the global effort to prevent and protect children against all forms of abuse.

As long as one kept the abuse under wraps and hesitated to bring it into open, the heinous crime against children would continue and hence this campaign.

It would help children to be cautious against uncomfortable touch and speak out against the offender to their parents and guardians and alert the family members about the possibility of such menace and take precautions for the safety of children, say the NGO members.

Stringent punishment

“We are lobbying for more stringent punishment for offenders and quicker justice to save the young ones from the trauma.” said Sirish and Ankuram secretary M. Sumitra.

The NGOs are actively working with children who have been sexually abused by counselling and extending them medical and legal assistance along with care and protection. One can contact Waves Foundation on Ph: No.27006574 to take to their notice any instance of child sexual abuse and the information will be kept confidential. The issue will be dealt with in a sensitive manner, say Foundation members.
