VIZIANAGARAM: Amidst noisy scenes, Telugu Desam members in the Zilla Parishad staged a walkout on Sunday when Chairperson B. Appala Naidu turned down their demand for a resolution on support price of Rs. 1,000 per quintal of paddy.
Soon after Joint Director (agriculture) A. Krupadanam informed the members that paddy farmers were happy with the yield per acre, the TDP district president and ZPTC member Y. Ramana Murty appealed to the Chairperson to pass a resolution fixing support price for paddy. While CPI (M) MLA Kolaka Lakshmana Murty supported his demand, Congress MLAs and ZPTC members said that it was a State subject and the Chief Minister had already met the Prime Minister. Hence, there was no need for a resolution at the meeting, they said.
During the heated debate on the issue, Lok Sabha member Botsa Jhansi Lakshmi took exception to addressing Prime Minister in singular number by Mr. Ramana Murty and refused to accept TDP’s demand for a resolution. After the TDP members, including MLA Padala Aruna, trooped out of the conference hall demanding implementation of Swaminathan Commission report, Congress members passed a resolution seeking a ‘reasonable’ support price for paddy.
