HYDERABAD: Commuters want auto-rickshaw drivers to install digital meters replacing mechanical devices.

An overwhelming majority of people have confirmed this in a public ballot conducted by the Jana Chaitanya Vedika (JCV) at the main bus stops in the twin cities on Sunday to gauge opinion of commuters on digital meters. Over 16,219 votes were polled supporting the government’s decision, while 1,712 votes supported auto-rickshaw drivers.

In all, 18, 350 votes were polled out of 20,000 votes prepared. Of them 292 votes were invalid, informed JCV president V. Laxmana Reddy on Monday.

Voters also gave suggestions appreciating the initiative taken to prevent auto drivers from cheating gullible commuters with mechanical meters, which can be easily tampered.
