GUNTUR: The District Excise and Enforcement wing sleuths on Thursday recovered 156 kg of Ganja worth Rs.3 lakh from an APSRTC hi-tech bus going towards Puttaparthi, at the National Highway Toll Gate at Kaja, about 15 kms away from here. Two persons, Akula Ayappa Reddy from Anantpur and S. Subramaniyam from Proddutur near Kadapa were arrested in this connection.

The raids were led under the supervision of Excise Deputy Commissioner K. Diwakar. Enforcement Circle Inspector Ch. Sai Prasad said that the haul could lead to uncovering of a major inter-state smuggling racket. The excise police have intensified searches in the neighbouring villages too, he said.

The enforcement wing sleuths were conducting inspections on vehicles at the toll gate on Thursday evening when they uncovered five bags of Ganja stored in the luggage cabin of the bus. The duo that were taken into custody later confessed to smuggling the ganja from Warangal district and told the police that the substance was meant for sale in the neighbouring States. The police slapped cases under NDPS act and the accused would be produced before the court on Friday.
