As the last Pakistani wicket fell, Hyderabadis erupted in joy

HYDERABAD: It was the proverbial icing on the cake for Hyderabadis on Monday evening. The Ganesh immersion festivities got a boost as the city erupted with joyous celebrations after the great Indian victory over Pakistan in the World Cup Twenty20 finals at Johannesburg in South Africa.

The otherwise busy Begumpet-Secunderabad, Ameerpet-Greenlands, Ameerpet-Punjagutta and several other main stretches in the twin cities wore a deserted a look as Hyderabadis were glued to the television sets.

People gathered in groups at electronic showrooms and shopping malls to watch the match and as the last Pakistani wicket fell, Hyderabadis erupted at one go to celebrate the win.

Festive ambience

Youngsters zooming on their bikes, holding the fluttering tricolour, raised slogans like “Bharat Mata ki Jai”, “Hindustan Zindabad” and the latest cheer “Chak de India.” It seemed like a humongous celebration at Necklace road where one could see many a youth dancing in the middle of the stretch and as time tickled by many joined them. A group of Sikhs started posing for photographers with the flags and broke into an impromptu “Bhangra” as though they had rehearsed it earlier.

It was probably for the first time where commuters stuck in a traffic jam were actually smiling even as the road was blocked due to the celebrations. A few children climbed up a ‘no parking’ sign board and began dancing while crackers were being set off on the road.

Middle aged men danced to drum beats and traditional ‘teen maar’ in front of the Ganesh pandals even as children were busy firing crackers. After a couple of hours, police personnel tried to shoo the partying people but it seemed that they too were dragged into the celebrations. Amid the celebrations, mobile phone users were flooding SMSes to friends and relatives.
