Memorandum submitted to the CPI (M) leader
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Joint Forum of 195 Land Struggle Committees have sought the support of CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat on indiscriminate acquisition of land for Special Economic Zones, industries and tourism projects.
In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Karat here on Saturday, the committee pointed out that the 134-km stretch of sea-abutting land was being acquired for tourism and SEZs. The fishermen were being shunted out of their homes.
The forum said Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority was auctioning valuable lands and hillocks to fill the coffers of the State Government by setting a target to realise Rs.1,000 crores by seeking lands.
It said in 11 Girijan mandals in the district, thousands were denied pattas despite cultivating lands for several generations.
Seeking distribution of pattas for the tribals, the forum pointed out how the State Government was seeking 25,563 acres of assigned lands cultivated by 16,859 poor people in 19 mandals of the district under an order issued on July 27.
