VISAKHAPATNAM: Opposition parties, which were agitating against bauxite mining in the agency area and establishment of alumina refineries in Makavaripalem and S. Kota mandals, staged a demonstration when Joint Collector M. Veerabhadrayya visited the site for the proposed refinery at Ramannapalem in Makavaripalem mandal on Wednesday.
People and farmers led by Narsipatnam MLA Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu (Telugu Desam), Chintapalli MLA G. Demudu (CPI) and CPI (M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao raised slogans against allotment of lands in Ramannapalem and Rachapalli panchayats when Mr. Veerabhadrayya inspected the lands to be allotted to the Rus Al Khaima alumina refinery. They said they would not hand over their lands to the government to establish the factory. CPI district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy said that bauxite mining and alumina factories would destroy the life of people in both the agency and plain areas and cause heavy pollution of rivers. He also said that the CPI would obstruct the bulk auction of lands to be conducted by the VUDA in the city on Thursday.
