Programme aims to cover 64 lakh of the 96 lakh children across the State

HYDERABAD: An estimated 92 per cent of the 64 lakh children below five years were administered polio drops in 14 districts across the coastal belt and Telangana, including the State capital, on Sunday.

The pulse polio programme was aimed to cover 64 lakh of the 96 lakh children across the State. According to Commissioner, Family Welfare, Anil Punetha, this time round the concentration was on fishermen’s villages.

A total of 37,770 polio booths were set up in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Mahabubnagar, Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts. In addition, 1,144 mobile teams were pressed into service for immunising the children.

In the city, Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy kicked off the campaign by administering the drops to a girl at his camp office.

Mr. Punetha said three cases of polio were detected between the last round of immunisation held on June 10 and August first week. In all, five cases were detected in the State this year, as against 139 in the country.

He said the seriousness of the Government and the WHO to eradicate polio could be gauged from the fact that Sunday’s round was the sixth round in the State this year.

Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme, dubbed as Sub National Immunisation Day, was taken up in the twin cities on Sunday with Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy inaugurating the drive at his camp office. The drive, carried out in 14 districts of the State, was taken up in the backdrop of fresh polio cases, which were reported from the districts of East Godavari and Nalgonda. The district health officials took up the task of administering the vaccine to an estimated 6.75 lakh children in twin cities.

As many as three polio cases of were reported from East Godavari while one case was reported from Nalgonda. A fresh day-long drive was taken up to cover families falling under the vulnerable group, a release from District Medical and Health Officer, Hyderabad Ch. Jaya Kumari informed.

Over 12,000 personnel were deployed for administering polio vaccine in the district, the release added. NGOs like Rotary Club, Lions Club of Hyderabad district, youth organisations like NCC also participated in the drive.

A mop-up programme would be taken up to cover those children who have missed out on Sunday’s vaccination drive. House-to-house vaccination drive would be taken up at Cantonment and other areas from August 20 to 22, the release informed.
