Arsonist strikes four times within a fortnight in a particular locality

HYDERABAD: An arsonist is making the lives of Sairamnagar residents miserable, after he struck and set fire to four motorcycles in a span of fifteen days. Police too are baffled about the identity and the motive of the arsonist, who is selectively targeting motorcycles parked inside the compounds of the houses.

With the arsonist striking four times in a fortnight, residents of Sairamnagar now, have taken up the duty of patrolling the colony streets from midnight to dawn, in addition to the enhanced police patrol in the area.

The first incident of arson was reported on July 20. The motorcycle of a software company employee, Karunakar was torched during day time.

Subsequently, the arsonist struck again on Sunday last. This time, he targeted motorcycles parked in two houses in the early hours. Colony residents woke up to the noise of the motor cycle petrol tanks bursting.

y the time they brought water and put off the flames, the two motorcycles, were completely gutted. The motorbikes belonged to

K. Ravikanth Reddy, a photorgrapher working with a Telugu Daily and K. Venugopal Reddy, a Government employee.

Strangely, the arsonist struck again on Sunday morning.

Near church

Another motorcycle parked in the compound of a church was set on fire around 11 a.m., while its owner Prasad was inside the church offering prayers. Worried over the recurrence of the motorcycle burning incidents, the church authorities had asked a boy to keep a watch on the parking lot. However, with the prayers beginning, the boy too went inside the church and minutes later Prasad’s mobike was set on fire.

Incidentally, all these incidents occurred around the church, a peculiarity beyond the comprehension of police as of now. The victims maintain that they have no enmity with anyone, which could prompt such actions, which led to a scare among colony people. With the increased civilian patrolling, the arsonist did not strike again, but fear continues to stalk the residents.
