Self-immolation bid: activists of student organisations go on the rampage

Sangareddy: Police resorted to lathicharge to control rampaging students at the Vijwala Junior College on Saturday following alleged suicide attempt by one of the college students on Friday evening in Siddipet.

According to Two Town police station sub-inspector Balaji, a second year Intermediate student of the college A. Sushmitha tried to commit suicide following disciplinary action taken by one of the college lecturers Vamsi who is also guardian of the girl. The lecturer is said to have reprimanded the girl for talking to her friends in the class. The lecturer asked her classmates not to talk to her for the whole day. Sushmitha, who was hurt by the incident, reached home and torched herself by dousing in kerosene. Her mother, who is a widow and sister, were not present at home at that time. Sushmitha is now fighting for life at Gandhi Hospital. She sustained more than 80 percent burns.

Meanwhile, activists of different student organisations joined together at the college on Saturday and organised a dharna and rasta roko. They alleged that Sushmitha resorted to suicide only because of harassment by the college staff. The activists later entered the campus and broke the glass panes of windows and damaged furniture. The students entered into a brick battle with the police. The police finally resorted to lathi-charge and chased the students away.
