KHAMMAM: A convoy of some 30 cars in which Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sambhani Chandrasekhar was travelling along with district Collector Shashibushan Kumar and Superintendent of Police D.S. Chouhan was stoned by an irate mob at Chirumarri village on Friday.

The Minister visited the village on his way to Mudigonda to console the families of Saturday’s police firing victims.

Two of those killed in the police firing – Balaswamy and Pasupuleti Kutumbaiah -- were from Chirumarri village. As the Minister entered the village, women came out of their houses making annoying gestures and heaping abuse on the Congress leaders and officials who accompanied him.

The relatives and family members of the two victims grilled him on the incident. Some women attacked Congress workers while others threw sand on two police personnel.

As the Minister got into his vehicle along with the district officials, a group of persons, all in an inebriated condition hurled stones on the convoy. One of them threw a stone targeting the Ministers car.

Though no damage was caused to the vehicle, the hostile reception given by the villagers prompted the police to make special bandobust for the Minister’s visit to Mudigonda.

A special party with stone guards was immediately rushed to the spot.

CPI(M) protest

The CPI(M) workers, who staged a protest demonstration in front of the Mudigonda police station with black flags, did not allow the Minister into the village for over an hour.

They relented later and allowed the Minister to visit the houses of the victims.

Seek apology

The protesters among other things sought withdrawal of all cases booked against the party workers in Mudigonda.

They wanted the Minister to tender an apology for blaming the CPI(M) for the police firing. The Khammam Revenue Divisional Officer and the local DSP had a dialogue with the protesters.
