Works of 500 artisans on display in the fair

Plans to hold similar fairs every month

Crafts mela will be on till July 20

VISAKHAPATNAM: The multi-hued crafts fair is back in the city. However, this time the traditional crafts have undergone some changes to give an aesthetic look to the final product. In its endeavour to bring forth the craft tradition of the region before the public, Kalasrusti Emporium is organizing a crafts mela at its showroom on the beach road.

The highlight of the fair is the leather lamp shades from Nimmalagunta. Works of some 500 artisans, involved in the leather crafts project at the region, are on display in the fair. Fine kalamkari patterns have been infused in the product for the first time to give it a new look matching the modern tastes of the market.

Visual appeal

Priced from Rs.250 onwards, the lamp shades can give a different visual appeal to the home interiors. “The artisans were given specialised training as part of the integrated design development project initiated by the society,” said Dasarathachary, manager of the showroom.

A host of other items like wrought iron artefacts made by the tribals of Araku valley and wooden tribal artefacts have also been kept in the fair. Kalasrusti plans to hold similar crafts mela every month during which artisans will be invited from various parts of the State to give live demonstration of the making of crafts, he added.

Apart from the traditional crafts, a range of handloom products is included in the fair. Bright coloured cotton batik shirts and kurtas from Bengal are the new entries this time. Dress materials with handwork embroidery are available at reasonable price.

The crafts mela will be on till July 20.
