South Indian Meera title conferred on Vani Jayaram

GUNTUR: Playback singer and well-known classical bhajan singer Vani Jayaram enthralled the Gunturians on a cool Sunday evening by rendering some of her own songs of yesteryears and those of others.

At the fully-packed Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandiram in the city, she was conferred the `South Indian Meera' title by organisers Dasari Cultural Academy on the occasion of its 29th anniversary. Guntur MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao conferred the title on the veteran classical singer and presented her a purse of Rs.25,000, a statue of Meera and a pattu saree.

Uniqueness of the musical nite organised with the musical support from Mayuri Orchestra of Vijayawada was providing financial assistance to humour artiste Kalpana Rai. She was given a purse of Rs.5,000 to meet immediate expenses and would be helped further from the proceedings of this musical nite the Dasari Academy president Pothuri Ranga Rao announced.

She began with Eee roju manchi roju... from the movie `Manchitanam' directed by K. Raghavendra Rao and lyrics writer Atreya, followed by the popular song Vidhicheyyu Vintalanni... from Marocharitra, originally sung by her in the movie then.

The academy had honoured Anjali Devi, Sri Devi, Kamala Hassan, and also presented Ghantasala award to Yesudas, S. Janaki and M.S. Viswanathan. The award was instituted three years ago.
