Agitators block traffic for about two hours

SRIKAKULAM: People in large numbers, led by Pathapatnam MLA Kalamata Mohna Rao and others, staged a dharna and a rasta roko at Kotturu junction on Thursday demanding immediate steps for provision of permanent floodbank to the Vamsadhara river at Vasapa.

Human chain

Floods to the Vamsadhara in last June caused huge breaches to the flood bank at Vasapa and the road between Kotturu and Nivagam that connected the Orrisa and Andra Pradesh States and thirty villages were marooned for a long time.

The agitators formed into a human chain and traffic was disrupted for about two hours. They later submitted a memorandum at the Tahasildar's office. Temporary repairs were taken up to the breach and the road at Vasapa.

Mr. Mohana Rao pointed out that monsoon season was about to set in and if permanent measures were not taken, even moderate floods to the river could cause havoc in several villages and the traffic between the two States would be disrupted. He said that nearly 100 services run between Orissa and Andhra States daily and the Kotturu-Nivagam road was the only link that connected the two States.

Dig at Congress

There are ten rice mills in Nivagam that gave a revenue of Rs.1 crore to the Government. These mills would also be cut off from outside world, if there were floods and the temporary works at Vasapa were washed out. He alleged that Congress leaders were coming in the way of taking up permanent repairs because it was located in his area and he belonged to the TDP.
