VISAKHAPATNAM: Curator of the Indira Zoological Park B. Vijay Kumar was taken into custody by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Friday on a charge of demanding and receiving a bribe. The curator allegedly demanded Rs.20,000 as bribe from the security contractor Appanna, who supplies security personnel in the zoo, for renewal of the contract. Appanna said he could pay only Rs.10,000 on Friday. He contacted the ACB and the accused was trapped when he received the amount. Investigation is on.
A former employee of the Customs and Central Excise Department was arrested on Friday on charge cheating scrap merchants to the tune of Rs.3.72 lakhs. According to the police, the accused, Syed Baizuddin, a tax assistant, was earlierconvicted by the CBI Special Court and dismissed from service in 2006. Baizuddin came in contact with scrap merchants from Ongole. He collected Rs.3.72 lakhs in two instalments for payment of duty. He said he would supply the scrap in a phased manner but failed to keep his promise.On Friday, the scrap merchants approached the police and the accused was arrested.
