The two MLCs were protesting in support of agitating teachers

HYDERABAD: The city police on Thursday took into custody Legislative Council members Chukka Ramaiah and K. Nageshwar when they staged a protest in support of the demands put forth by the agitating members of the Joint Action Committee of Teachers' Organisations.

Tense moments prevailed at Tank Bund, the venue of the dharna, when the protesting teachers resisted the efforts of the police to shift Mr. Ramaiah and Nageshwar. They were demanding that the Government concede the genuine demands of the teachers who were continuing boycott of the spot valuation of SSC examination papers.

JACTO threat

The agitating MLCs who were taken into custody were released later even as the Hyderabad unit of JACTO threatened to close schools in the city from Friday if the Government did not invite the teachers' representatives for talks and resolve the demands amicably.

Meanwhile, the Affiliated College Teachers' Association of Andhra Pradesh expressed its solidarity with the agitating teachers and threatened to launch direct action if the Government failed to resolve the impasse.

In a press release, the association warned the Government against playing with the lives of students by entrusting spot valuation works to people who were not qualified.
