Expensive vaccines

Sanitation and health are the responsibility of the Government .

The failures in the spheres of health education and communication have brought untold miseries to millions of our population. The most vulnerable component is health. Vaccines to protect ourselves from the epidemics are growing dearer by the day. The State authorities are conveniently avoiding their responsibilities by putting the vaccines and vaccinations in the hands of private agencies. With expensive vaccines coming into play and with corporate interests having a big stake in the vaccine market it is clear that the poorer sections of society have remained untouched as the prices of vaccines have touched unaffordable levels.

The Government is morally bound to provide basic health facilities to people. Therefore, vaccines and vaccinations should be handled by the Government to reach all levels of people.

Welcome move

The decision of the Tamil Nadu Government to inflict corporal punishment against students is a welcome move. In the wake of suicide committed by students, every teacher should rethink the relevance of the old saying, "Spare the rod and spoil the child." However, there should be no room for violence in the learning process. Otherwise, the dictum may well become "Use the rod and spoil the child." Finally, physical punishment could make students develop a negative and adamant attitude, which is harmful to society. There should be a balance and the decision should be an eye-opener to teachers.

Commendable service

With a view to saving valuable lives, the "life-line" service of `108' ambulance is worthy of emulation. The people of Anantapur and nearby villages are really indebted to the commendable services rendered by the organisers who, on receiving a phone call, reach the spot in no time and take the persons battling for life , to hospitals .
