Project to be completed next month
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam port has successfully navigated Panamax vessel drawing 225 metres LOA, 32.26 metres beam and 72,000 DWT vessel into the inner harbour on Saturday for the first time in the history of the Port. Until now the port was catering to vessels up to 210 metres LOA.
The entrance channel of the Inner harbour is one of the narrowest channels, thus restricting the entry of Panamax vessels. In order to obviate this constraint and to facilitate trade to reap benefits of freight advantage by deploying bigger size vessels, the port has spent Rs.25 crores on deepening and widening the entrance channel and turning circle to facilitate the navigation of Panamax vessels. The project, which commenced in the month of August 2005, is nearing completion by March 2007 after which Panamax vessels with 11 metres draft can be brought to inner harbour.
