HYDERABAD: Librarians will henceforth be called Library Information Officers in the State.

Addressing the second State conference of the Andhra Pradesh Zilla Grandhalaya Samastha Employees Association here on Thursday, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy said orders would be issued shortly to re-designate the librarians.

Dr. Reddy promised to examine the request of the employees that they should be brought under the purview of provincial service.

"Even panchayat raj employees are presently not under provincial service and it will not be that easy to consider the request of the ZGS staff immediately," he added. The Chief Minister directed the officials to issue an order so that the Zilla Grandhalaya Samastha employees would get their salaries on the first of every month.

Chada Venkat Reddy, Communist Party of India MLA, said functioning of Zilla Grandhalaya Samasthas should be transferred to the Department of Culture instead of the Education Department. Cess collected by the local bodies was given to the libraries for development, he noted.

Grandhalaya Samsthan chairman K. Sambasiva Rao urged the Government to provide computer with Internet facilities in the district libraries. Employees association president K. Madhusudan Raju and Secretary (School Education) K. V. Ramanachary also spoke.
