Two markets to come up on the Besant Road
Decks cleared for construction of officials' quarters New rates for registration of house sites discussed
VIJAYAWADA: Two major projects, proposed by the officials of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) under public-private partnership (PPP), were approved at the general body meeting of the corporation on Thursday.
The meeting gave its green signal to the development of Mahanti (fish) market and Govindarajulu market, both on the Besant Road, in PPP mode. Through a separate resolution, it also approved the construction of residential quarters for VMC officials at a site in Brindavan Colony where dilapidated quarters exist as of now.
An amendment proposed by the opposition parties, favouring the VMC to develop the markets on its own, was defeated by two votes. The amendment was moved by CPI (M) floor leader Ch. Babu Rao, CPI floor leader P. Gowtham Reddy and TDP floor leader Yerubothu Ramana.
The general body approved the construction of quarters for officers at Brindavan Colony on a sharing basis, with the VMC getting 60 per cent of the area to be built up and the contractor getting the remaining.
It also laid down several other conditions. Though the Left corporators opposed this proposal too, they did not propose any amendment to the resolution.
The meeting also discussed at length the new rates fixed by the VMC for registration of house sites given to beneficiaries as part of various rehabilitation programmes.
The Left parties rejected the proposals, but did not insist on voting.
The corporators discussed the problems of old-age pensioners, workers of sanitation wing and self-help groups who had to appear for frequent muster roll calls.
The general body, in a resolution, also opposed the shifting of the Bhavanipuram Lorry Stand to the Jupudi Truck Terminal.
It wanted officials to continue operating the lorry stand at its present location.
