Sculptors find big business coming in from all corners
HYDERABAD: Emotions are opportunities too. Grief pouring in from all corners of the State over the shocking demise of Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy is translating into a several orders to sculptors.
Six days after his death in the air crash, quite a few sculptors have their hands full- all for Dr. Reddy’s statues.
“I already have four, two from the city and two from Anantapur. While a local leader from Chaitanyapuri sought a bust-sized statue, the other three orders were for life-size ones. We are expecting more orders in the coming days,” says D.Mayacharya (ph: 9949915566), a seventh generation artist and son of the reputed ‘Telugu Talli’ sculptor D.Sankar.
In fact, Mayacharya and his brother Nagamaya Narayanacharya started getting the clay model ready two hours after the announcement of the death of Dr. Reddy. Usually, statues are ordered in cement, fibre, or bronze depending on the affordability. While cement and fibre cost less, the price of a bronze bust weighing about 50 kg costs anywhere around Rs.85, 000. A life-size is priced at around Rs.3 lakh, getting dearer by each foot thereof.
Mr.Mayacharya says each statue in bronze takes about two months if done at leisure. However, there have been times when he delivered one within 12 days.
Unlike Mayacharya for whom sculpting is a family tradition, there are others who run it as an industry. Workshops are set up with artisans and part of the work is outsourced to students of fine arts.
“Since YSR’s death, I must have got around 1,000 phone calls. I have accepted about 80 offers and right now, I am having clay models prepared for patrons’ approval,” says V.Shiva Varaprasad, owner of Sri Saibaba Mega Shilpashala, Vijayawada. Most of the orders with him are for cement statues which cost about Rs.20, 000. There are requests even from DWCRA associations and self-help groups.
“MP Lagadapati Rajagopal asked for a 15-foot statue in bronze. There are also orders from Jogi Ramesh, Koneru Rangarao, K.Udayabhanu, and M.Budhdha Prasad,” Mr.Prasad claims, “Earlier, maximum number of orders were for statues of Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. Now, perhaps YSR will outdo both.”
