Award is given to outstanding personalities in the literary and cultural arena.
VIJAYAWADA: Prominent Telugu film lyricist Veturi Sundara Ramamurthy on Sunday was given Jandhyala memorial award. Sponsored by Abhiruchi, a cultural organisation, the award has been constituted to commemorate Telugu film director Jandhyala and given to outstanding personalities in the literary and cultural arena.
Opening his speech in a tone heavy with emotion, Mr. Ramamurthy said amidst thunderous applause: Chiranjeevi Jandhyala ki na aaseesulu. (May God bless the immortal Jandhyala). Words failed him and his voice choked, but he managed to regain his composure after a brief pause and recalled the precious moments he spent with his dear friend whom he called a multi-faceted personality.
"He was 14 years younger to me. I am still struggling to come to terms with the fact that he left all of us. So painful was his absence that at one point of time, I almost felt like a walking corpse. But, the overwhelming response of the public to his works and to his humane persona has given me courage to live with a hope; A hope that the inspiration generated by his good work will be absorbed by the future generations and we will continue to see many more Jandhyalas in the days to come," he said striking an immediate chord. He said Viswanadha Satyanarayana and Jandhyala were two landmarks for Vijayawada city and people here would forever feel proud of their association with this place. "Jandhyala himself was like an award in my life. I am happy to accept this honour," he said suggesting to the organisers that the name of the award be altered from Jandhyala smaraka (memorial) award to just Jandhyala award, keeping in view the fact that the legendary film director continued to live in the hearts of scores of his fans. Comedian Suththivelu, Jandhyala's close associates and many others were present.
