VIJAYAWADA: Philanthropists and service organisations from different parts of the State have come forward to lend a helping hand to flood victims of Krishna district.
Over 150 representatives of such organisations from across the State were present at a meeting convened by District Collector Peeyush Kumar at his camp office here on Sunday.
They expressed willingness to take part in the short-term and long-term service activities to be initiated by the district administration.
“The response was overwhelming from individuals and organisations. What we plan to do is coordinate all the service organisations and launch service activities in a phased manner,” Mr. Peeyush Kumar said, addressing a press conference after the meeting.
As part of implementation of the short-term plan, the administration was already taking the help of the service organisations to provide food and shelter to the flood victims.
“There is a need to distribute groceries and utensils to many victims, who lost everything to the flood. The loss is substantial in island villages where the fishermen have lost their houses, boats and fishing nets,” he said.
In the long run, the district administration was planning to construct flood relief centres in the city and the district as well.
Each centre would cost about Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 75 lakh. It would be useful for the people as well as the cattle during floods and other natural calamities.
Mr. Peeyush Kumar called upon the philanthropists and service organisations to contact any official of the district to extend help.
A special control room with phone numbers 0866-2426103 and 0866-2570083 was set up in the city for the benefit of the philanthropists.
