HYDERABAD: With most of its new multi-purpose sports stadia caught in the incessant whirlpool of revised plans and re-tenders, the GHMC seems to have gone for a simpler method to provide playgrounds to citizens, especially youngsters.
Instead of big time civil works, it has drawn an action plan to improve and maintain 121 open spaces in many areas under its jurisdiction.
“We will be levelling the ground and undertake minor repairs to make them available to the people in the next couple of months because the sports season has begun,” said Director of Sports S. Premraj.
The largest number of such playgrounds are at Central zone – 36, followed by South zone – 31, East zone – 24, North zone – 18 and West zone – 12.
Mr. Premraj said that works had already commenced in 102 of the playgrounds and several inter-school competitions in various disciplines like football, basketball and others are being taken up at respective zonal levels. “We have had very good response from the schools for our competitions,” he said.
New playgrounds have been identified in places like Uppal, L.B. Nagar, Kapra, Serilingampally, Kukatpally and others. He said there are plans to lay tennis courts and cricket pitches in some of the grounds.
