Kakinada: The State Legislative Assembly Committee on Public Undertakings visited Kakinada Seaports Limited (KSPL), Spectrum Power Generation Limited (SPGL) and Coromandel Fertilizers Limited (CFL) here on Monday and took stock of the development / expansion works of the respective companies.

Led by chairman N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and comprising Nomula Narasimhaiah, P. Venkata Reddy, P. Raghunadha Reddy, Chitturi Ravindra and P. Subba Reddy as members, the committee first visited KSPL (deep water port) where they were apprised of its performance and future projects by Assistant General Manager (Logistics) M. Murali Krishna.

Mr. Uttam Reddy asked whether KSPL was likely to be affected by the upcoming ports at Krishnapatnam and Machilipatnam, to which Mr. Murali Krishna replied that Kakinada deep water port was a multi-purpose one capable of handling higher quantities of cargo but it required speedy expansion and improved infrastructure to face the competition.

KSPL is the national hub for export and import of fertilizers and food grains, edible oils and to some extent iron ore. But, in over all terms, Krishnapatnam and Machilipatnam ports were better positioned to establish themselves fast. KSPL got a fourth berth which is ccommodating handymax vessels and it has been planned to upgrade the berth to handle the bigger panamax ships.
