HYDERABAD: The 36th edition of Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroha will begin at Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj International Centre of Cultural and Aesthetic Studies, Nizam College, on Thursday.

Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, doyen of the Mewati Gharana of Hindustani music Pandit Jasraj said the four-day event will start with performances by Sabir Khan (sarangi) and Vidushi Sudha Ragunathan (Carnatic vocal). Apart from Niladri Kumar (sitar), Friday will have a performance by Sanjeev Abhyankar (vocal).

Line-up of artistes

The third day will feature Guru Kalyanasundaram and disciples (Bharatanatyam) followed by Rattan Mohan Sharma (vocal) and Pandit Kumar Bose (tabla solo). The event will conclude on Sunday with a morning concert at 10 a.m. by Hemang Mehta (vocal) and Dr. N.Rajam (violin), while the evening session will see Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Mohan Veena) and Pandit Jasraj. The evening sessions will start every day at 7.30 p.m. Pandit Jasraj recalled his association with the city and how in his childhood enjoyed playing ‘kabaddi’, ‘lattu’ and ‘goli’ in the lanes of Hyderabad. “This city is my ‘teerth sthaan’ and here I come every year to perform,” he said.

He rejected the perception that the younger generation was not very keen about classical music and said that a major part of his audience comprised young boys and girls. “Western music has its own limitations, while our music involves a lot of imagination,” he said.

There was abundant young talent keen on classical music, he said and narrated how Ankita Joshi walked 100 km seeking to be his disciple.

“The young girl walked all the way from Nanded to Pune, where I was giving a performance, and asked me whether I will teach her,” he said.

Apart from his wife Madhura Pandit Jasraj, his disciples Ankita Joshi, Shashank and Rattan Mohan Sharma were also present.
