Artisans trained by A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation

Hyderabad: Now one can look for lively and inspiring designs in zari and zardozi craft. At least 80 new designs are going to hit the market in the days to come.

A group of artisans trained by A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation are working to produce fresh set of designs.

Four design and technical development workshops got underway on Wednesday each comprising 30 trained women.

Two workshops will function in Chadarghat and two in Vatepally and Jahanuma areas of old city.

Four designers trained at National Institute of Fashion Designing will assist the women - all members of self help groups registered under Ambedkar scheme. They have undergone training and have recently been provided with improved tools to enhance their skills.

Mohd Ilyas Rizvi, vice-chairman and managing director, A.P. State Minorities Finance Corporation, who inaugurated the workshop, said the corporation had a scheme to financially assist the artisans. It will arrange bank loan and provide subsidy of Rs. 30,000 for those who intend to set up their own businesses. The corporation would also extend scholarship to minority students, Dr. Rizvi said.

He said zardozi craft was very advanced in Lucknow and it would be better if the artisans were sent there to improve their skills.

V. Venkatramaiah, vice-chairman and managing director, A.P. Handicrafts Development Corporation, said the new designs created at these workshops would be introduced to customers through Lepakshi outlets. If the designs were liked by customers, the corporation would start commercial production of the product. It was necessary to keep pace with the changing times and introduce new designs to attract customers, Mr. Venkatramaiah said.

He said the government had earmarked Rs. 7.20 lakh for the four design workshops.
