HYDERABAD: In a move which could embarrass the government, Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Mohd. Jani has criticised a proposal to alienate thousands of acres of Wakf Board lands to the A.P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC).
At a press conference, Mr. Jani demanded withdrawal of all such plans. Specifically pointing to the move to allot 1,260 acres of Wakf land in Aloor village, near Chevella, to APIIC, he said it would send wrong signals to Muslims.Mr. Jani stated that he had called on Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy during the day and urged him to drop land allotment to APIIC. “Instead, I urged him to set up a Wakf development corporation which would take care of lands and develop them.”
He was critical of the conduct of Minorities Welfare Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir for holding meetings with industrialists and officials to discuss land alienation at Aloor. He referred to the opposition of Muslim elders to the move and said the lands could be developed by the proposed corporation and use the income for minorities’ welfare. He pointed out that Wakf lands were allotted to the Hyderabad International Airport and Lanco Hills. “If the revenue from the lands was given to the proposed Wakf Development Corporation, the government need not allocate special budget for minority welfare,” he said.
