VISAKHAPATNAM: Septuagenarian president of Praja Spandana, C.S. Rao, went on a day-long fast near the Gandhi statue in front of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation on Saturday to create awareness on the issues which he has been raising since 2003.

“I went to Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2005 and obtain a stay for maintaining status quo in the old Central Prison area of 30 acres.

The matter is still pending but local bodies are attempting to grab some of the land. In the revised master plan of VUDA, two hectares of this land is being knocked out for APSRTC,” he lamented.

The other issues raised by Praja Spandana were the demand for separate railway zone in Visakhapatnam about which the people’s representatives were not bothered, auction of lands and even the hills which housed historic monuments and valuable medicinal plants, and plight of dwellers in about 250 slums which lack basic amenities.

“Also, our candidates who went for interview at railway recruitment board in Orissa were badly treated but now the Central and Bihar governments are crying foul and demand their right for jobs in Maharashtra. Our government does not protect our people,” Mr. Rao pointed out, and wanted people to elect only committed persons with proven record of sincere service in the general elections to be held next year.

Former energy secretary E.A.S. Sarma, who was present, was unhappy that local people and senior citizens were not consulted before taking up any projects to develop the area.

Former Mayor Rajana Ramani, S.V. Adinarayana Rao of Prema Hospital and others spoke.
