HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu said his party was committed to the policy of nurturing a Telugu-speaking population but it took the decision to support a separate Telangana in deference to the feelings of the people of the region.

Addressing the State formation day celebrations at the party office on Saturday, Mr. Naidu recalled that the TDP had gone to elections in 2004 with the slogan of integrated State. However, the party studied the pulse of the public subsequently and decided to back Telangana statehood . He said his party’s latest stand was not surprising because he had himself declared in Nellore three years ago, that the party would take a decision on the demand, at the right time.

Referring to the classical status granted to Telugu by the Centre, Mr. Naidu said it had become inevitable for the UPA government ahead of elections.

Taking a dig at PR chief for criticising the TDP during his ongoing yatra, Mr. Naidu said, he was yet to learn lessons in politics.
