Minister wants insurance cover extended to the breed
Subsidy on fodder for the breed sought
State-level meet in January planned
PATA LINGALA (KHAMMAM): The AP Ongole Cattle Breeders Welfare Association which met at Pata Lingala village with its honorary president and Minister for Information and Technology R. Damodar Reddy in chair wanted more patronage from the Government for promoting the breed.
Addressing the meeting the Minister said he would talk to the insurance companies and ask them to extend insurance cover to the Ongole breed that enjoyed greater demand world over. Many people had been evincing interest in the breed, but a majority could not do justice to the cattle because of the huge cost involved.
The Minister said that the Ongole Cattle Breeders Welfare Association would also extend support to farmers who find it difficult to support such animals. When cattle were affected by diseases, it was difficult even to get veterinary help. Insurance coverage was a must for bailing out the farmer.
The Minister said wherever the breed shows were organized, the lineage of the bull and profile of the breeder must be put on display. Speakers at the meeting wanted the Minister to help extend subsidy on the fodder for the Ongole cattle.
The association decided to have a State level conference on the need for promoting the breed in January next.
The chief Minister would be invited for the conference. The society would soon have a flag of its own along with a logo.
R. Venkata Reddy, Sujathanagar MLA and brother of the Minister said that a special initiative was needed to save the
native breeds from extinction. He said the cows of the breed should be given more importance as they were a boon to milk producers..
He said his family had taken to breeding of the Ongole cattle out of sheer love for animals which were no longer in need thanks to the thrust given to farm mechanization.
