Orange-laden lorry overturns after hitting edge of a culvert

MAHBUBNAGAR: Six women, including three teenaged girls, were killed instantaneously and 10 other women injured when the oranges-laden lorry they were travelling in turned turtle after hitting the edge of a culvert near Dandyala Thanda, a remote village in Ghanpur panchayat of Achampet mandal, about 150 km away from here on Tuesday morning.

A group of 31 women, all of them farm labourers were sitting atop the lorry. The injured were shifted to Devarakonda hospital in adjoinng Nalgonda district with the help of a ‘108’ ambulance. The driver, Muthyam, is absconding.

The victims were identified as B. Satyamma (50), K. Venkatamma (35), U. Venkatamma (30), M. Padma (16), M. Hemalatha (16) and N. Chandrakala (14).

According to information reaching the district headquarters, all the women hailed from Nalgonda district and came to Dandyala Thanda on Monday to work in an orchard and harvest oranges. After the day’s work was over, they stayed over for the night and were proceeding towards Mallepalli at about 6.30 a.m. The mishap took place after the lorry had covered just a kilometre.

Circle Inspector (Achampet), Majid and Sub-Inspectors Srinivas and Malla Reddy rushed to the spot. The police said the driver lost control over the vehicle due to overload.
