HYDERABAD: For the second successive day on Friday, Backward Class organisations continued to protest the alleged casteist remarks made by J.C. Prabhakar Reddy, brother of Panchayat Raj Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy at a meeting with the Transport Commissioner.
On a call given by the AP Nayee Brahmin Seva Sangham, members of the community staged State-wide protests demanding an unconditional apology from Mr. Prabhakar Reddy. The AP Goud Sangham also took serious exception to the remarks and demanded stern action.
Hair-cutting saloons remained closed as a mark of protest. Demanding the arrest of the Congress leader, a large number of Nayee Brahmin members joined a protest demand at Indira Park here on Friday.
The AP BC Federation president R. Krishnaiah, Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti founder president Manda Krishna, TDP MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav, BJP general secretary K. Laxman and others participated in the programme. They vowed to continue the fight till Mr. Prabhakar Reddy was arrested.
Elsewhere, the Mahabubnagar unit of Nayee Brahmin Sangham and members of the Kula Vivaksha Porata Samiti took out a rally in the town and burnt an effigy of Mr. Prabhakar Reddy. They demanded that a criminal case be booked against him for deriding particular castes.
In Khammam, Nayee Brahmin community members observed a bandh by closing down their hair dressing saloons. They took out a huge rally and disrupted vehicular traffic at Mayuri Centre demanding action against the Congress leader.
In Tirupati, Nadaswaram and Dolu artistes, hailing from the Nayee Brahmin community who belong to the Nayee Brahmin’ (barber’s) community, took out a procession by playing in chorus the Nadaswaram and their percussion instrument Dolu. Nearly 2,000 demonstrators assembled at the statue of social reformer Jyothirao Phule and went on a procession.
