KHAMMAM: Powers cuts affected the operations in over 800 granite polishing units in the district and their owners are up in arms against Transco. Some of the units have laid off their workers for over a week as they are uncertain of the power supply timings. The daily production which ranges from 400 sft to 500 sfft depending on unit capacity, had come down by 50 per cent. Many of them have been failing to meet their bulk supply commitments.
The Granite and Tiles Unit Owners Association staged a protest at the Transco office opposing the cuts. They wanted the Transco to stop supply to the granite units one day in a week while ensuring uninterrupted supply for remaining six days. Some 30,000 local workers are engaged in the units besides thousands of workers from Rajasthan, Orissa and Kuppam area also.
