HYDERABAD: AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily has asked the Rajasekhara Reddy government to fulfil the aspirations of people as expectations of the people were on the rise following the huge budgetary allocations made for various schemes.

“Raising the expectations of people is sometimes good and sometimes adventurous. Since you have chosen to ride the tiger, you must ensure that it maintains the required speed. Otherwise, it will swallow you,” he said at the launch of the party’s membership drive here on Monday.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and APCC president D. Srinivas kickstarted the membership drive by formally reviving their memberships.

Mr. Moily said after the government had set several schemes rolling, it was for the party to take them effectively to the people in order to achieve inclusive growth. The Congress rank and file should work in absolute coordination in connecting the people with the government and the party which could be achieved by team work alone.

Outlining the priorities of the party in the election year, he announced the launch of ‘Gandhi March’, a mass mobilisation campaign aimed at enrolling 40,000 to 50,000 dedicated workers in each district. Responding to queries at a press conference later, he said despite being positively inclined towards Telangana, the UPA could not take a decision as the issue too was evading consensus.

The CPI (M) would have walked out “had we pushed it forward without evolving consensus. We would have faced the trial of strength much earlier if we had hurriedly pushed Telangana issue forward,” he said.
