VISAKHAPATNAM: It was just over nine months ago that the Sports Authority of India established its Sports Training Centre in basketball at Kurnool to spot and nurture basketball players in Andhra Pradesh.
The facilities have not been created in full measure and players are just now started playing as a team but what they have achieved in the South Zone inter-STC tournament held here recently is some thing really good. They had upset last year’s runner-up Salem in the round-robin and ultimately finished runner-up of the tournament, losing to holder Calicut.
Coach B.V. Ramesh while appreciating the players for their good show said the facilities provided for the team at the Port indoor stadium, venue of the tournament helped it a lot.
The players have never played on a wooden surface (the STC is still in the infant stage and this facility has not been provided yet). But the team which landed here well in advance has been provided the facility by the Port administration and the players spent a lot of time on the wooden court and got used to it.
Abdullah Khan of the team has been awarded the Most Promising Player award. Mallayya, Rafi and others showed good talent and observers say Suresh of Kurnool is a good prospect from AP and he will go places.
