VIZIANAGARAM: Dhobis on Thursday staged a dharna at the Collector’s office demanding that the Collector and the Superintendent of Police interfere in the social boycott imposed on them at Kothapenta in Bobbili mandal, Sivaramapuram in Salur mandal and Karlam in Cheepurupalli mandal. M. Durga Rao, president of A.P. Rajaka Vruthidhaarula Sangam, said that eight families at Kothapenta, 20 at Sivarampuram and 35 families at Karlam were subjected to social boycott for demanding increase in wages in tune with the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

In the said villages elders imposed fines ranging from Rs.500 to Rs.1,000 if any one found helping them in any manner. The dhobis were being paid Rs.150 to Rs.200 or 20 kunchas of paddy for washing clothes of a couple in each family per year, Mr. Durga Rao said.
