VIJAYAWADA: The AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) will focus on rationalising its operations in Vijayawada region, says the new Regional Manager of the public transport organisation A. Koteswara Rao.

Speaking to the media on Sunday after formally assuming office, Mr. Rao said the objective would be to make the organisation more useful to the public in the best possible manner.

“We intend to lay more emphasis on high frequency corridors which would mean induction of more buses wherever required,” he said pointing out that the RTC made rapid strides in Andhra Pradesh State when compared to the neighbouring states like Karnataka.

Referring to the guidelines issued by the corporation authorities to concentrate on enhancement of commercial revenue, Mr. Rao said a string of measures had been taken for additional revenue and fresh options would be explored to further augment the organisation’s financial position.

He said a comprehensive study would precede initiation of steps to avoid over-crowding of buses in specific corridors. To a query on its fleet of buses run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Mr. Rao said though advantageous in their own way, there were several limitations with regard to operation of CNG-run buses.

Admitting that the corporation had been incurring huge losses in rural sector, he attributed it to the people’s mindset. “People must realize the significance of safe journey and shun private vehicles that have been fleecing them. We will chalk out a plan and capture them route-by-route,” he said. Pointing out that illicit operation by private vehicles in RTC routes was eating into a major chunk of the organisation’s revenue, he said this would be effectively tackled in the days to come. Deputy chief mechanical engineer P.V. Rama Rao, deputy chief traffic manager, Vijayawada, A. Sudhakar, and others were present.
