Kakinada: A meeting convened to resolve the ongoing impasse in Pottilanka where confrontation between two communities resulted in the death of an SC youth last week failed to bear fruit as the rival groups refused to budge from their stand.
An initiative of Social Welfare Minister P Subhas Chandra Bose and Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi, the meeting was aimed at bringing the two groups together for a dialogue to restore peace.
The three-hour meeting, however, came to naught as the representatives of the two groups indulged in mutual recrimination instead of paying heed to the Minister’s request.
Tempers ran high and Amalapuram Congress MP G.V. Harsha Kumar who participated in the discussions on behalf of the SCs came out of the venue in a huff alleging that some SCs were implicated in false cases due to political pressure.
This indirect reference to Excise Minister and Kadiyam MLA J Rammohan Rao evoked strong protests from his followers who charged the MP with levelling “baseless” charges.
Mr. Harsha Kumar also threatened to sit on a fast-unto-death if the suspended police officers were not arrested under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act even as a section of representatives of SCs expressed apprehensions of fresh attacks by upper caste persons.
In a sharp retort, A. Satyanarayana who participated on behalf of the rival group alleged that the police were booking cases on all those against whom the SCs pointed their fingers at.
The media personnel were barred from covering the proceedings with an assurance that the collector would brief them later about the proceedings.
