NELLORE: With the Government issuing an order to name the district after Potti Sriramulu, Nellore has joined Prakasham and Ranga Reddy districts, which were also named after eminent persons.
Besides, a long pending demand from a cross section of people has also been fulfilled after almost 55 years.
It may be recalled that Nellore District Arya Vysya Sangham first passed a resolution in Nellore in 1954 demanding that the district be named after Potti Sriramulu.
Subsequently several persons and organisations at different platforms took up the issue and finally the Congress, led by Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who was then functioning as an Opposition party leader, moved a non-official resolution in the Assembly in 2003 seeking that Nellore be named after the great personality.
And finally the ruling Congress led by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a day ahead of the 55th death anniversary of Amarjeevi - December 14, 2007 - announced the district would be named after Potti Sriramulu, who sacrificed his life demanding a separate State for Telugus.
Accordingly, the Government issued G.O. 676 on Thursday and a Gazette notification might also be issued within one week.
Meanwhile, several persons have welcomed the Government’s order.
Information and Public Relations Minister Anam Ramnarayana Reddy claimed that the ruling Congress led by Mr. Rajasekhara Reddy fulfilled the long pending demand.
But the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) district president termed the decision as “belated” wisdom and alleged that the Congress had taken four years to issue an order.
Thanking the Government, several Vysya community leaders demanded that the Government should also strive both to erect a statue as well as a portrait of the great leader in the Parliament.
