Charges police, land mafia with pestering him in land dispute

Mastan Rao was found unconscious a week ago in a flat

Case comes to light on Monday after kin approach the police

HYDERABAD: A realtor, Mastan Rao, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in a flat at Malaysian township at Kukatpally, accusing the Madhapur police and land mafia of pestering him in a land dispute case.

Rao was found lying unconscious in a flat a week ago and was shifted to a corporate hospital where he is battling for life.

The suicide attempt case came to light on Monday when Rao’s family members approached the Kukatpally police alleging that harassment by the Madhapur police and some land mafia gangs had driven him to suicide.

Letter to police

Kukatpally Inspector V. Surender Reddy said that Rao’s family members had handed over to the police a letter purportedly written by Rao alleging that the Madhapur police and some gangs were harassing him. The letter and the allegations levelled by Rao’s family members were being examined, he explained.

The police could not register Rao’s statement as he was unconscious. Meanwhile, the Madhapur police Inspector N. Bhujanga Rao told reporters that Rao was one of the accused in a forgery and cheating case registered last year. According to him, Rao and his associates allegedly sold land belonging to an ex-serviceman by fraudulent means.

“Rao secured anticipatory bail in that case on April 17. None of our policemen questioned him in recent times let alone harass him,” the Inspector said.
