‘We have a new APCC president and there is a need to unite and strengthen his hands’

HYDERABAD: Veteran Congress leader and the AP State Road Transport Corporation Chairman M. Satyanarayana Rao has made it clear that he would not be part of the group of party seniors from Telangana, who have been raising their voice in support of statehood.

Days after openly asserting that the seniors should ‘shut their shop’, Mr. Satyanarayana Rao disapproved the insistence of certain party leaders on continuing their activities to pressure the high command to concede Telangana. “This will only damage the party,” he remarked.

Mr. Satyanarayana Rao recalled that Congress Working Committee member G. Venkataswamy invited him to his residence to make a formal announcement that there would be no (dissident) activity in the presence of other leaders. “I said that as we have a new APCC president, there was need to unite and strengthen his hands,” he added.

He noted that when the Congress high command had said that it was seized of the matter on Telangana, it was not fair to repeatedly raise the issue. “I am a strong Telangana protagonist but I will respect party’s decision to take an appropriate decision at appropriate time,” he observed.

Mr. Rao reiterated his earlier stand that he was against fielding party nominees for the bypolls in Telangana but said he would sincerely follow the party’s direction to the contrary and campaign for the candidates. The statement of newly appointed APCC president D. Srinivas that the party was keen on fielding its nominees in the bypolls should also to be respected. “If we are going to contest the elections, we will approach people with our version and abide by their verdict”, he added.
