The 1.2 crore facility is first of its kind in SCR jurisdiction
HYDERABAD: They say energy saved is energy produced. Taking a cue from this concept, South Central Railway (SCR) in a bid to conserve water installed a water recycling plant at Secunderabad railway station and is reaping good benefits out of it.
Secunderabad railway station operates about 160 mail and passenger trains and handles about one lakh passengers every day.
30 lakh litres
The maintenance of these trains, including washing of 800 coaches, aprons and platforms of the station requires over 30 lakh litres of water daily.
Spending Rs. 35 per 1,000 litres of water, SCR purchases over 13 lakh litres of water from Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) daily. The monthly water expenditure (for maintenance of coaches and platforms) goes up to nearly Rs. 20 lakh.
Apart from drawing water from water board, SCR taps water from borewells in and around the Secunderabad railway station and still falls shorts of its requirement.
In order to meet the water requirement, SCR installed the recycling plant, a first of its kind in its jurisdiction at Secunderabad station last month with a cost of Rs. 1.2 crore.
Earlier, water used for cleaning the coaches and platforms at the Secunderabad station used to drain off through the sewer canals. But with the installation of water recycling plant, all the used water is collected through pipes and sent to the plant for biological and chemical treatment. Though not fit for drinking, recycled water is good enough for cleaning the coaches and platforms and the cost of recycling is Rs. 13 per every 1,000 litres of water thus saving Rs. 22. Another advantage is that the sludge and residue from the water recycling plant will be used as manure for the plants, explains an SCR spokesman.
With summer fast approaching and scanty water supply from HMWSSB, this water recycling plant would be handy for SCR in meeting the water demand for maintenance of coaches and platforms of Secunderabad station.
At Hyderabad too
South Central Railway is proposing to install a similar plant at Hyderabad railway station, he added.
