VIJAYAWADA: With Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy informing the Assembly on Friday that the needle of suspicion in the murder of Ayesha Meera points to her maternal uncle, the police have begun pointing out that they had, indeed, questioned Ahmed Ali, 23, son of a cousin of Shamshad Begum, the victim’s mother, but could not get any clinching evidence.

A resident of Tenali and a mechanic at Autonagar there, Ahmed Ali was questioned by the police teams that went from here. The police said their suspicion was based on the information provided by the victim’s friends that Ayesha had told them that Ahmed Ali was harassing her.

The police said Ahmed Ali’s handwriting only “resembled” that of the letter found at the site of the offence, while the DNA clearly did not match. The relatives of Ahmed Ali raised a hue and cry whenever he was picked up by the police.
