2 lakh ex-gratia to family of deceased

ANANTAPUR: Tension prevailed in Hindupur town in the district on Friday after a small-time goldsmith, Noorullah, 26, of Kamsalipet committed suicide in his shop after he was picked up by the Two Town police.

He was alleged picked-up on charge of purchasing gold and a television set from burglars.

The goldsmith ended life by consuming cyanide. He was found battling for life by neighbouring shop workers and was rushed to the Government hospital, where he breathed last.

The deceased was allegedly picked up by two constables Rammohan and Mallikarjuna from his shop around 11 a.m. and taken to the police station, based on the confession of a burglar, Riyaz, that their gang had sold gold and a television set to him.

Unable to bear the humiliation at the hands of police, Noorullah consumed cyanide.

As the news of his suicide spread like wildfire in the town, a huge crowd belonging to a particular community gathered at the hospital.

They took the body to the Tehsildar’s office, placed it in front of the office and staged a protest.

A bandh was observed in the town and a ‘rasta roko’ staged. Meanwhile, the Government announced Rs. 2 lakh ex-gratia to the family of the deceased.
