HYDERABAD: The Buddha Purnima Project Authority, responsible for maintaining and beautifying Hussainsagar lake area will celebrate World Wetlands Day at Sanjeevaiah Park here on February 2.

Hussainsagar built more than 400 years ago is an important wetland with a diversity of flora and fauna and the message should be spread among people to conserve it as collective heritage, says BPPA Special Officer N. Chandramohan Reddy.

BPPA will celebrate the day along with other agencies like Centre for Environment Education, WWF-India and Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Nature Studies to focus on this year’s theme ‘Healthy Wetlands, Healthy People’.

The Sanjeevaiah Park located on the fringes of Hussainsagar has more than 100 species of resident and non-resident birds, 86 species of different trees, herbs, shrubs, more than 50 species of insects and butterflies and other fauna is the venue for various programmes for schoolchildren like nature trail, Hussainsagar trail, painting and quiz competitions on the themes based on birds, plants and environmental issues.
